Thirteenth Year & Dual Credit Program

The Rockford Lutheran 13th Year Program provides a variety of college credit options through which students are able to accumulate college credit equivalent to a semester, a year, even more; all before they graduate from high school! These options include:

  • Dual Credit
  • Advanced Placement Testing
  • CLEP (College Level Entrance Proficiency testing)
  • Online College Courses
  • Rock Valley Coursework
1.     Dual Credit:

We offer 9 courses on campus which provide college credit through Concordia University-Nebraska and Concordia University-Chicago.  This credit is transferable to most any university in the country, just as credit from Rock Valley College or any other accredited institution.  These courses include:

  • Principles of Biology
  • General Chemistry
  • Principles of Macroeconomics
  • Experiences in Writing
  • Introduction to Literature
  • American Government
  • Introduction to Psychology
  • Beginning Spanish II
  • Statistics

Visit the following page for more information:  http://wp.cune.edu/dualcredit

We also offer on-line Dual Credit through Concordia University-Wisconsin, for a tuition cost as low as $50 per credit hour, which can be refunded if you eventually attend Concordia-Wisconsin!

2.     Advanced Placement Testing
For more than a decade, RLS has been offering college credit through the Advanced Placement Testing Program (AP). Typically we administer more than a dozen different AP exams with over 70% of our students scoring at least 3 out of 5.  We currently offer:

  • US History
  • Calculus AB
  • Statistics
  • English Literature
  • English Language
3.     CLEP

College Level Entrance Proficiency tests (CLEP) are similar to AP tests. They can provide opportunity for students to receive credit in areas where no AP exam exists, such as Sociology. Many RLS students receive significant credit in their foreign language through CLEP due to the opportunity to take up to 6 years of the language.  It is not unusual for a student to test out of 4 semesters of their language at the college level, and be given the option to complete a collegiate minor in the language with the addition of only 2 more courses.

4.      Online College Courses

Online college classes are one of the fastest growing opportunities in education today.  Please visit the Online Learning page on our school website for more details about this exciting opportunity.  Note that all graduates are required to complete at least one online course prior to graduation.  This course can also be a non-credit course, if so desired.

5.     Rock Valley College

Many of our students take classes at RVC during the summer in order to advance their opportunities. See the Guidance Office for the required forms for dual credit.

NOTE: Transferability of college credit is always dependent on the receiving institution. Please check with your institution concerning their credit transfer policies.
