Lori Dobler for the second straight year will implement curriculum she designed from summer programs at the University of Illinois. This past summer's program was part of a year-long collaborative project, Waterclear, funded by the National Science Foundation and sponsored at The Center of Advanced Materials for Purification of Water with Systems (CAMPWS). Having used her nanotechnology materials the past two years, Lori this March will integrate her water purification module as a WebQuest concerning the human body systems. A WebQuest is an instructional unit centered around a question that, by using higher-order thinking skills, results in original artifacts or outcomes based online with links to websites.
Using a You-Tube introduction, the WebQuest will begin with a discussion of a blood assessment for toxins. The class will be divided into groups for online research regarding how water affects each body system and how pollutants in a water system might cause potential entry of toxins into one's body. At the conclusion of the projects, students will share their knowledge with their classmates through development of a specialized storyboard. There will also be a challenge to consider specific ways that ideas from the unit can be used to revise current lifestyles.
